During the 2021 pandemic, I had the chance to participate in the IACS (Indonesian Arts & Culture Scholarship) program, also known as BSBI (Beasiswa Seni & Budaya Indonesia). This annual program, initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2003, aims to educate people from around the world about traditional Indonesian arts and culture. Participants are brought to Indonesia to learn from various art centers across the country.
In 2021, I was placed with Sanggar Lang Lang Buana in Banyuwangi. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic-related travel restrictions, the program had to be conducted online. While I was grateful for the opportunity, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed that I couldn’t experience Indonesia in person. Despite this, I completed the scholarship online, understanding that the situation was beyond anyone’s control

Fast forward to March 2023, I moved to Bali, Indonesia, to immerse myself in Indonesian culture and deepen my understanding of traditional Indonesian dances. Three months into my move, my friend Yasmin from Lestari Melbourne applied for the IACS program and was accepted, coincidentally placed with Sanggar Lang Lang Buana in Banyuwangi, the same Art Centre I was associated with online in 2021.
Since I had just moved to Bali, and Banyuwangi was only a ferry ride away, I decided to visit my friend and take the opportunity to meet Sanggar Lang Lang Buana in person. Long story short, during my visit, they offered me a spot to join the program again, an offer I couldn’t refuse. And so, my journey continues!

From childhood curiosity to cultural events, my passion for dance ignited at the age of 10 when my parents introduced me to traditional Indonesian dance classes at the consulate, marking the start of an exciting journey into my heritage through the art of dance.
